*Event: Curator Talk: Stuart Horodner
Artistic Director Stuart Horodner leads a tour and discussion of the current exhibitions. He will focus on the artists’ use of materials, and issues of tradition and process.
On view: Jessica Jackson Hutchins: The Important Thing About A Chair, and John Heward: Things
Two exhibitions that combine expressive gestures, sensual materials, and space-altering invention. Works by Jessica Jackson Hutchins bring together glazed ceramic vessels nestled into altered furniture, and mixed media works on paper combining printmaking, collage, and drawing/writing. Hutchins was an acclaimed participant in the 2010 Whitney Biennial. John Heward is one of Canada’s most respected artists, and his formal investigations into the possibilities of painting and sculpture are well known in that country. He is also an internationally known jazz drummer. This is the first major presentation of his work in the United States.

Alex Brewer, Dixie Purvis, and Brett Smith:  Mark Making in Black and White.  This exhibition is about the act of painting, specifically mark making in a restrictive palette.  The artists share the art of mark making in their work.  This gestural act is used dramatically and differently by each of these three artists.

{Poem88} at Tanner-Hill Gallery

Roney’s newest multimedia project deftly sets the stage of a poignant moment in time, a choice, “to stay or to leave”. Circumstances are deconstructed through a series of parallel, bifurcating movements in which randomization software plays a key role, allowing a third and final author to participate, beyond the artist’s creation. Roney explores the psychological space “ in between”, where hybrid identity is crystallized and personal and social identities are transformed by multicultural and virtual influences in a real-time world.

Using these as source images for paintings, video and prints, I attempt to challenge the fixed quality that photos seem to attach to identity, and to get at something more ineffable than likenesses. The works present, instead, the ever-shifting nature of identity. We change with every breath. I’m replacing the “proof” presented in photos with a re-imagining, a fiction, the unknown.”

After all, the suburbs promised to be a neat, new, affordable Eden. Veronica De Jesus: Emanate Car Show @ Get This! Gallery, NOV 20th

YUF, White artist ink and spray enamel on paper, 2010

Emanate Car Show

Solo exhibition by Veronica De Jesus

November 20, 2010 – January 8, 2011

Opening reception: Saturday, November 20, 6-9 pm

Artist talk: Saturday, 20, 12-1pm (Westside Arts 3rd Saturday Art Walk)

Get This! Gallery is pleased to present the solo exhibition Emanate Car Show, by Veronica De Jesus. This is Veronica’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. The exhibit will consists of  new “car drawings” done in Veronica’s signature style of white artist ink on paper.

Veronica states that “the catalysts for her works are always rooted in the personal; she puts faith in the deep history of reasons”. Veronica spent much of her childhood in cars, moving from place to place. Throughout her childhood, her dad and older brother were constantly on the move. The freedom that cars represented was very important to her and her family.  “No matter how difficult things became, we could always escape—all we needed was a car and the open highway.”

The cars that De Jesus has focused on for this show are very inspiring to her.  They are Impalas, Chevelles and Firebirds from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, drawn from images that she finds online.  Veronica also looks at cars that have been forgotten, but for a brief period had some gust of attention surrounding them.  She explains, “they are cars that personally excite my heart, so beautifully made that when I see them they immediately give my imagination permission to fantasize and to dream.” Veronica’s car show focuses on the balance between earth and technology, and also on the beauty of design, the beauty in patterns, and the beauty and majesty of our imagination.

Veronica De Jesus was born in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in many American cities.  After attending community colleges in the Sacramento area, she was accepted to the San Francisco Art Institute, where she graduated with honors in 1998.  In 2001, De Jesus was accepted to the Master of Fine Arts program at UC Berkeley.  The Department of Art Practice awarded her the Eisner Award twice, once for each year of the program.  De Jesus was granted a yearlong residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts in Marin, California. She has had solo and group exhibitions at the Cue Art Foundation in New York, Paper Boat Gallery, Milwaukee, Michael Rosenthal Gallery, San Francisco and Sampson Projects, Boston. Veronica De Jesus currently lives and works in Oakland, California.
