In OVO, the magical world of insects comes alive by the dancers and acrobats of the Cirque du Soleil, now playing at Atlantic Station.
Under the imposing big top, the set is surreal and surprisingly intimate. Every seat feels just steps from the stage and performers. The live band plays an array of music: everything from calypso to James Bond-like rock to modern classical. Fans of Cirque du Soleil will not be disappointed by the elements that make their productions so beloved: the soloist acrobats, the flying dancers, the sychronized performances of the little Asian girls, and the amazing 9-man trapeze act.
What separates OVO from other Cirque shows is the loose storyline that follows a group of insects and their quest for a giant egg or “OVO”. The multitude of strange and unique characters interacting in a sort of organized chaos is reminiscent of a Jean-Pierre Jeunet film with elements of vaudeville and slapstick thrown in.
Overall, the feel is energetic and lighthearted and makes for a crowd-pleasing family-friendly show. Children will love the harebrained antics of the ‘Ringmaster’ and his sidekicks while adults will be impressed at the sheer precision and beauty of the acrobatic performances. The creativity of the costumes, staging and music makes one feel as if they have delved into another world, with a myriad of sights and sounds to constantly entertain.
