Get This! Gallery is pleased to present the solo exhibition Emanate Car Show, by Veronica De Jesus. This is Veronica’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. The exhibit will consists of  new “car drawings” done in Veronica’s signature style of white artist ink on paper.

Veronica states that “the catalysts for her works are always rooted in the personal; she puts faith in the deep history of reasons”. Veronica spent much of her childhood in cars, moving from place to place. Throughout her childhood, her dad and older brother were constantly on the move. The freedom that cars represented was very important to her and her family.  “No matter how difficult things became, we could always escape—all we needed was a car and the open highway.”

The cars that De Jesus has focused on for this show are very inspiring to her.  They are Impalas, Chevelles and Firebirds from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, drawn from images that she finds online.  Veronica also looks at cars that have been forgotten, but for a brief period had some gust of attention surrounding them.  She explains, “they are cars that personally excite my heart, so beautifully made that when I see them they immediately give my imagination permission to fantasize and to dream.” Veronica’s car show focuses on the balance between earth and technology, and also on the beauty of design, the beauty in patterns, and the beauty and majesty of our imagination.

Veronica De Jesus was born in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in many American cities.  After attending community colleges in the Sacramento area, she was accepted to the San Francisco Art Institute, where she graduated with honors in 1998.  In 2001, De Jesus was accepted to the Master of Fine Arts program at UC Berkeley.  The Department of Art Practice awarded her the Eisner Award twice, once for each year of the program.  De Jesus was granted a yearlong residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts in Marin, California. She has had solo and group exhibitions at the Cue Art Foundation in New York, Paper Boat Gallery, Milwaukee, Michael Rosenthal Gallery, San Francisco and Sampson Projects, Boston. Veronica De Jesus currently lives and works in Oakland, California.
